Natural Fibre Highlands Bilum
Natural Fibre Highlands Bilum
- This bilum is hand-woven from 100% natural fibre sourced from the bark of a special tree from the surrounding vegetation and cuscus [possum] fur
- The process of making a natural fibre bilum is painstaking and takes many weeks
- The barks are beaten into loose stripes and are dried in the sun
- The dried strips are then twisted by placing the fibres on the weaver's thigh and are rolled in a backward and forward motion with their hands to form long threads
- The threads are then woven into bilums using a traditional weaving technique
- Bilums are very versatile and expandable.
- Each bilum has a story and the patterns are a visual language and authentic to the women who weave them.
